Are you able to quietly listen to others in conversation and to add your own comments only when you are able to make some positive contribution to the discussion?
Or do you like the sound of your own voice and are quick to put in your two cents, whether or not you actually have something meaningful to say?

Today's Principle

Your attempts to remain the center of attention and always giving your opinion obviously annoys others because you yourself are annoyed when other people do that to you. Strengthen relationships by putting others at the center of your attention, your spouse in particular. Become comfortable with silence.

August 17 — Acknowledge Your Significance

Today's Questions

Do you feel connected with the world and know in your heart that you are part of something bigger than yourself?
Or do you have a sense of futility and imagine that your life counts for little? Or nothing?

Today's Principle

Recognize that you play a role in the narrative that is continually unfolding about you. Accept the fact that you can shine a light on the unfolding stories of everyone you meet — spouse, friends, neighbors, or even passing strangers. Their lives will rise and fall depending upon the quality of your own love for life and for God.

Do you retain a hopeful attitude even when things seem to be going desperately wrong?

The best response to any catastrophe or tragedy is to find a place of peace in your spirit and to embrace the certainty that "This too shall pass," no matter how terrible or even final the particular "this" may seem.

Total success in all relationships depend upon your being able to live above circumstances and "to keep your head about you when those about your are losing theirs and blaming it on you," as Kipling advised. Learn to be constantly joyful, peaceful, and happy. Why wouldn't you?

August 14 — Don't Sound so Sure of Yourself

Are you more interested in being kind than in showing that you are "right"?
Or are you so certain of your beliefs and convictions that you feel free to make critical comments about and to people who disagree with you?

Today's Principle

Be careful of others' feelings. Don't simply "get off your chest" some strong opinion if doing so causes pain. Humility and kindness build relationships; making certain others know what you think is a relationship killer.

Is your emotional wellbeing disconnected from whatever circumstances are happening about you?
Or are you happy when things go well but gloomy and depressed when life doesn't go the way you wish or people don't behave as they should?

Today's Principle

You can take control of your emotions, which means that you do not have to ever display negative attitudes, hurt feelings, or grouchy opinions. A positive disposition will make you a better companion and, most importantly, will make you an easier person for your spouse to live with.

Do you remain calm when things happen that could make you angry or upset?
Or do you often respond with anger and bitterness when life and people fail to meet meet your expectations and wishes?

Today's Principle

Striking back at any person for some perceived personal injustice or betrayal will never do you any good. Seeds of anger yield a crop of isolation and loneliness. Sew harmony and forgiveness, on the other hand, and you will reap harvests of camaraderie, fellowship, friendship, and love.

August 11 — Don't Be Angry

Are you able to control your emotions when another driver, your spouse, or some other person makes you upset? Is road range never a problem?
Or do you sometimes fly off the handle in angry response to some situation or person that does something you don't approve of?

Today's Principle

Nobody on earth can make you angry. Emotions such as hostility, range, and animosity come out of a negative pool in your spirit. Take control of your imaginations so that you begin draining that reservoir of its bitter contents.

August 10 — "Keep Your Sunnyside Up"

Are you generally in a cheerful, helpful frame of mind?
Or are you often in a dour, grumpy, or surly mood?

Today's Principle

Your own feelings are brought down in the presence of people who behave in a grumpy unpleasant manner. Therefore, do what you can to never (as in, not ever) behave in a grumpy unpleasant manner. Throwing all your energies into becoming the kind of person your spouse will enjoy being around provides some assurance that your spouse (and the others in your life) will, in fact, continue to remain around.

Or do your commonly try to shift blame away from yourself to someone else, or try to find excuses for what you did?

Today's Principle

The harsh truth is that we can never make progress in our lives until we assume responsibility for the outcomes of our choices and behaviors. If we aren't responsible then, of course, we're stuck with what life has become and we are powerless to make any improvement.

If you seek to comfort people when they are hurting and miserable by trying to explain why they should be feeling different or better, you will be driving a wedge between you and their spirit. You draw them closer to yourself if you embrace them, spiritually and physically; attempted explanations or offering solutions only push them away.

Does your spirit remain at peace when someone says something demeaning or insulting to you or about you — and do you ignore  juicy gossip  about about another person?

Today's Principle

Pay no attention to any bad comments made about yourself because you have passed on gossip about others, and perhaps even originated some of it. We become better and even more lovable people if we simply ignore any gossip, whether directed towards us or about someone else and learning to just let it go by in either case.

The possibility of developing a wholesome relationship with a spouse or with anyone else is diminished or even vanishes for people who devote more attention to how they are perceived in the relationship than on the relationship itself. It isn't about you; it's about them and it's about who you are together. You will be really good for others to the extent that you get over yourself.

Are you seldom annoyed by the stupidity and ignorant behavior of your spouse and the other people around you?

Nobody ever said anything critical or judgmental to us without it wounding our spirit or making us angry and, in either case, tempting us to emotionally withdraw from them. Never once! We will thrive if, more than simply keeping negative opinions to ourselves, we nurture the values of forgiveness, kindness, and generosity to the point that are aren't even inclined to say anything critical or judgmental.

July 16 — Don't Be So Sure

Are you transparent and honest about the limitations of your intelligence and wisdom?

Holding to beliefs and convictions in a belligerent unreasoning fashion prevents reasonable conversation with people holding to opinions and perspectives that differ than our own. Such stubbornness reveals a fundamental lack of integrity that limits our full engagement even with people who agree with us. We never become wiser.

Are you tolerant of the beliefs and opinions of others that lead differ from your own?

Whenever we look with disdain and contempt upon anyone, we effectively destroy the possibility of demonstrating sincere compassion or love for that person. Using our opinions as a basis for pushing other people away is an effective way of diminishing our joy; setting up standards of religious beliefs as a basis for judging others reduces my ability to be an effective a human being.

We will never improve the quality of our relationships with anybody by a show of anger, but will accomplish much by being calm and forgiving when things go wrong even through stupidity, ignorance, or even malice. After all, what can we accomplish by a show of temper except to make people fearful of our wrath? This may feel satisfying on some level but does absolutely no good if our aim is to actually nurture our relationships. Any angry outburst involves breaking The Golden Rule, which is always a fundamentally dysfunctional thing to do.

Obviously, when you make cutting and judgmental remarks about others, you are creating the opposite of a positive influence on that person. Equally important, gossipping and nattering about the faults and failures of others does not improve the quality of your relationship with the person or persons you are speaking with. The pleasing sense of superiority deriving from the "I'm OK; You're OK; They Arn't OK" attitude of such exchanges is vastly different from the joy that you receive from healthy and happy patterns of communication. Gossip diminishes people. Why do that?
